Rating Scale

The rating scale question type lets respondents select one answer from a list of choices. The list of choices can either be numbers (e.g. 0 – 10) or text (e.g. Very Satisfied, Satisfied, Neutral etc).

The rating scale question type is very versatile, and just like the radio question type and checkbox question type, works well in most polls, surveys, forms and questionnaires.

Answer choice format

Number

If using the number answer choice format, then the start number can be either 0 or 1. And the end number can be 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10. You can also add a label to the start and end numbers.

Here’s an example showing the number answer choice format with labels added to the start and end numbers:

Text

If using the text answer choice format, you can input the answers respondents will be able to choose from. Check the "Bulk Add" toggle to add answers in bulk. You can add as many answer choices as you like, but try and keep the number of answer choices to below 20 to avoid overwhelming respondents (use the Dropdown question type if you have lots of answer choices).

Here's an example showing the text answer choice format:

Displaying aggregate data

The rating scale question type works great with the Poll+ and Poll / Survey form types as it will display aggregate data (just like the radio and checkbox question types).

Once a respondent answers a question, a percentage bar displays beneath each answer choice showing an aggregate of the number of respondents who've selected each respective answer choice as a percentage. This data is aggregated, meaning we take the number of previous responses, work out how many responses there were for each answer choice and then display the percentage. This is great for polling as a major pull factoring for a respondent to provide an answer is to see where they fit compared to everyone else.

Here's an example, showing aggregate data:

How to add a rating scale question

01 When on the ONFORM editor, click the "+" button and select "Question"

A new question block will then load

02 Click on the "Question Type" dropdown and select "Rating Scale"

03 Add your question in the "Question" box

This is the question that will be asked, and which respondents can select one answer from a list of choices for.

04 Choose the "number" or "text" answer choice format

Choose “number” (e.g. 0 – 10) or click the toggle to choose “text” (e.g. Very Satisfied, Satisfied, Neutral etc…)

05 Add your answer choices

If you choose the “number” answer choice format, you can choose the start number & label and the last number & label. If you choose the “text” answer choice format you can add the answer choices one-by-one or you can check the “Bulk Add” toggle to bulk add.

06 Adjust settings as necessary by clicking the options tab and choosing the relevant settings

The available settings are:

  1. Note (allowing you to provide additional supplementary information)
  2. Required (the respondent will have to provide an answer to the question)
